DAY FIVE : Deventer

Today we took the train from Haarlem to Deventer - It's quite a long train journey. It took us 1.45 hours to get to Deventer. Once we were here Mum's Cousin Karel and his partner Henny picked us up from the train station and took us to our accommodation. After we dropped our bags off and they took us for a walk around town and showed us where Mum lived with her family and other places of significance. It was all very interesting. Deventer is a much quieter city than Haarlem or Amsterdam.

Dinner was asparagus- not the puny green stuff we get, but massive white stalks. The Dutch seem to celebrate it. It was accompanied by shrimps, ham, salmon and egg. These were sprinkled over the top and drizzled with melted butter. It was delicious.

Our B&B is on Wall Straat. It is so named because it runs along the defensive wall built in the thirteenth century to keep vikings etc out. There are only a few bits of the wall remaining, but the town is still layed out as it was 700 years ago. Many of the buildings are much newer than that (circa 1600s).
