In Deventer they have a big square. On Saturday's they have markets where the people buy their fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, cheese (loads of beautiful yummy cheese - I hope we can take some back with us.
Mark and I walked around and found a belgian chocolate shop - we went in and is smelled so appealing that of course I had to buy a sample box. It was amazing, for Euro 6.50 we bought 250 grams of hand made chocolates. They put it in a little box and then put a rose on top. The presentation was beautiful, the chocolate was too.
We also went to a cheese shop, this particular one is famous in Holland and has won quite a number of awards and trophies, I don't think I have ever seen so much variety of cheese in one place before.
Mark and I had some Herring, it was so fresh it melted in your mouth, this was Mark's first try of it and he liked it very much (or so he said)
After our expedition we walked to a windmill that has been fully renovated and now drives a saw mill and then to Twello - apparently we did about 8/10kms, it was a great walk and a good way to see the surrounds of Deventer. We went past a house that is being used in the remake of the movie "A bridge too far" and walked over the bridge that is also heavily featured in the movie. Does that make us famous by association?? There were dozens of Canadian veterens wandering the streets.Deventer is one of those rare places where strangers passing by say "hello".
It sounds like your day was incredible! Mum, in that picture you look off with the fairies - perhaps dreaming of all the cheeses you wish we had in Australia?

People don't wear clogs in the street, but then the city people never did I think. I believe the farmers still wear them, they certainly make heaps of them in the factory so there must be a market for them somewhere.
ReplyDeleteWhole WHEELS of CHEESE! heaven!!! I'm almost crying with happiness that there is a place on earth like that. I've decided that I'm going to motorbike around europe, and was just planning on how i would go about strapping one of those wheels of cheese to my back :P
ReplyDeleteWow herring! did you know that just a couple of days ago, a giant herring was found off the west coast of Sweden - it was 3.5m long! try eating THAT herring!!!
