Day Three - Almere and Enkhuizen

The street lined with pink flowers is where we stayed with our friends Alexandra and Rob. It's hard to believe that it's 5 metres below sea level - protected by a series of dykes.

The area was reclaimed from the sea in the 1930s. It's named Almere. The name looks much like Allsmere or Alkmere, and yet the pronounciation is completely different. There is some secret rule of pronounciation that only the locals know. They never divulge it to outsiders so they can laugh at their silliness.

The wooden ship is Batavia - a replica of the ship that found its way to Australia before James Cook was even born.

The picture of us eating is actually at a historical villiage where they show how Nederlands people used to live hundreds of years ago. It was a very interesting day and we are very pleased that we had the opportunity to visit it. We were really lucky because the women in this particular house made lunch of stampot and offered us some to taste - it brought back memories of when Ingrid was still at home.
